One standout example of this commitment is BGE’s award-winning work on the CapEx Tunnel and Pump Station, part of the historic $4.5 billion I-35 reconstruction through downtown Austin. For this transformative project, BGE designed a six-mile network of 22-foot-diameter stormwater tunnels nearly 200 feet underground, along with a relocated, state-of-the-art pump station to enhance both efficiency and environmental impact.
The result: a resilient, future-ready stormwater system that protects the region against extreme weather while supporting long-term urban growth. The project earned a 2025 ACEC Texas Engineering Excellence Awards Silver Medal for its groundbreaking design, technical excellence, and successful delivery ahead of an aggressive schedule.
