When power is scarce, and schedules can’t slip, BGE delivers the full-spectrum of engineering to get mission-critical facilities built on time, in compliance, and ready to scale.
Across the United States, infrastructure constraints are blocking or delaying projects worth tens of billions of dollars. The developers who move fast aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets; they’re the ones who had the right team from day one.
Before a dollar is committed, you need to know whether a site can actually support your vision. BGE’s proprietary SpyglassTM GIS platform ties it all together at the front end, layering power infrastructure, gas availability, water supply, environmental constraints, and land-use data into a single site-screening environment. That means faster decisions, fewer surprises, and a clearer path to construction.
Before any of that work begins, the land has to be ready. BGE manages the full civil scope that datacenter projects demand: site selection and feasibility analysis, boundary and topographic surveying, environmental due diligence, entitlements and permitting, grading and drainage design, utility coordination, and construction management. We navigate the jurisdictional relationships — with municipalities, utility providers, power companies, state agencies, and community stakeholders — that determine whether a project breaks ground on schedule or sits in a queue.
Power availability is now the primary concern in data center development. BGE designs natural gas pipelines, meter and regulator stations, and onsite distribution systems. Our team has worked alongside onsite natural gas power generation companies on exactly these types of projects, designing the gas infrastructure that keeps mission-critical facilities powered and permitted.
From Virginia to the booming corridors of Texas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and the Carolinas, the Southern United States is at the center of one of the largest infrastructure buildouts in American history. Billions of dollars in datacenter investment are flowing into the region, and yet project after project is stalled not by a lack of capital, but by a lack of site readiness.
Right now, the hardest problem in datacenter development isn’t the building, it’s the power. Utility interconnection queues stretching over 4 to 5 years have fundamentally changed how data centers are built. Developers who can’t wait for the grid aren’t waiting; they’re turning to natural gas generation onsite. That brings an entirely different set of engineering requirements: pipeline design, meter and regulator stations, onsite piping to the gensets, air permitting for the generators, and coordination across disciplines that most civil-only firms simply can’t cover. BGE can.
BGE is a multidisciplinary firm with more than 1,100 professionals across 20+ offices, and we’ve structured our data center practice to solve the constraints that actually stop projects: power, water, drainage, permitting, and site readiness. We don’t hand off. We coordinate. That means fewer gaps, fewer surprises, and a clearer path from concept to construction.
BGE works under non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with multiple active data center clients across the Southeast. We understand the current industry priorities shaping how these facilities are planned and permitted:
