Transportation – Large Firm (Category H)
Brown & Gay Engineers, Inc. was awarded a Gold Medal in the Transportation category for the Texas State Highway 99 (Grand Parkway) Segment E, which connects IH 10 to US 290 on the west side of Houston. The Engineering Excellence Awards honor and recognize outstanding achievements within the engineering community in Texas.
The Grand Parkway is a 185-mile outer loop is in the greater Houston area. BGE was first contracted to work on Segment E in 2000 by TxDOT. During the 8 years it took to move the project through the rigorous environmental review, transportation funding changed, and the project ownership transferred to Harris County Toll Road Authority. In 2011, Harris County returned ownership of Segment E back to TxDOT.
BGE’s determined and innovative efforts to keep the project on track amid multiple owners and funding scenarios resulted in a project that fulfilled the vision of enhancing connectivity and providing congestion relief. Opened to traffic in December 2013, the project was completed on schedule with a $25.7 million savings from the original estimate. The project was also a top 10 finalist in the 2014 America’s Transportation Awards, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation officials, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
